The Not In Our Name Project was initiated at a meeting in New York City, on March 23, 2002. The meeting was called for by a letter that proposed ways to strengthen and expand resistance to our government's course in the wake of September 11, 2001.
Paul Miller (DJ Spooky) asked me to design an album cover for a Saul Williams EP called "Not In Our Name". I believe Saul penned the entire Pledge of Resistance, a poignant and poetic cry of resistance to the manner in which the US government responded to 9/11.
DJ Spooky, Coldcut from Ninja Tune Records, and DJ Goo made musical remixes of Saul's spoken word recording of the Pledge.
Despite some resistance within NION to use aspects of the American flag within the design, I wanted to include the flag as this was not necessarily a repudiation of all things American but of the forces within America acting against the nation's stated ideals.
